Narrative of the Young Shepherd

At the center of the mesmerizing rolling hills, resided a young shepherd. His life was untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was mainly to look after his flock of ewes.

Their soft bleating and the rustling of the gales among the solo tree on the hilltop were his constant associates. Day in day, looking out for his wards instilled in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.

Yet, there were website at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for company. During one such occasion because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome plot.

Stories of wild beasts hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a trick on the villagers.

One day he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to help but saw nothing threatening.

The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This game continued for a couple of more days. Yet, one noon, a real wolf did come to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the town only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the results of false alarms.

The tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once lost, is tough to earn back. It's a story as relevant today as it was in the past.
